Where has the loyalty gone?

Where has the loyalty gone?

I have always been a bit of a news junkie. I typically enjoy staying caught-up with the things going on here in Utah, around the country, and in the world. I find myself struggling to find enjoyment in the climate that seems to have become the norm in the media. Self-centeredness seems to be at the heart of so many problems surfacing across the country.

This self-centered norm exists largely because too many in society are focused on “what’s in it for me?”. Selfishness is at the root of so many problems that I help couples and families with on a regular basis. For some, gone are the days when loyalty defined character. Loyalty to family, employers, brands, local businesses, and spouses is becoming less the norm. Loyalty to me is at the helm. It’s sad.

The eroding impact of this lack of loyalty can damage couple and family relationships. Much of what we start with in couples counseling is helping couples identify how their mindset and shift toward greater loyalty. We need loyalty in relationships.

Consider where your loyalties lie. How loyal are you in the various facets of your life? How loyal are you in your relationships? Allowing those you want to be close to, especially your spouse, to be more important to you than you are to yourself will change your life. That is where your loyalty should go.
