I consider it important for me to be aware of treatment options available for my clients. Recently, this one specific treatment option has been beeping onto my radar over and over: NEUROFEEDBACK. I first became impressed by Neurofeedback when I saw a little boy struggling with behaviors, tantrums, violent outbursts become calm, and for the first time, in control. Like many others, he had entered treatment and done recommended treatment, sometimes about 40 sessions.
Neurofeedback is a treatment used for stress, anxiety, adhd, learning disorders, depression, bipolar, organic brain issues, migranes, PTSD, etc. One of the common reasons that people like Neurofeedback is they want an option for treatment beyond medications and talk therapy.
Neurofeedback is retraining the brain and practicing self regulation through monitoring your own brain waves. Clinicians or technicians will put sensors on your head to monitor waves and waves will be represented on a screen in the version of a game, such as; watching monsters eat each other or blasting a space ship across a galaxy.
It’s simple and effective. Its even been touted as a “cure” for ADHD by pediatric specialists. This CNN spot talks about Neurofeedback for ADHD and anxiety.
Other forms of biofeedback can help retrain your body to respond better to emotional challenges. One company called Heart Math makes a biofeedback monitor for your breath and heart rate that many find effective for decreasing anxiety and panic attacks. I recently used their machine called the EmWave 2 and was impressed with the little machine’s sensitivity. Within minutes I felt more aware of the subtle thoughts and circumstances causing my heart rate to increase. After doing several training sessions I noticed an increased ability to remain calm when faced with anxiety producing situations.
Needless to say, I recommended biofeedback to several clients that very week. Education is your best friend. Learn about your treatment options, and talk to trained therapists. For more information about traditional therapy contact Swinton Counseling.
