“Unplugged Night”

“Unplugged Night”

The concept of having an “unplugged night” came while my husband and I were both going to school, working full-time, and balancing the task of beginning our young family. Oftentimes at the end of the day, we would sink into the couch and relax to our favorite show. It was a simple routine that worked for us.

One night, we decided that we wanted to do something different. We decided to have an “unplugged night”. We agreed to put aside anything that had to be “plugged in”. This meant no t.v., computer, phones, etc.

We had no idea how much our relationship craved this attention. It wasn’t anything big by any means, and to be honest, I don’t even remember exactly what we did. I’m pretty sure it included playing board games for two, cooking together, and a lot of talking. What I remember most is how that first “unplugged night” felt.  The focus on each other was intense. There were no other distractions, and I remember smiling at each other a lot. I was hooked.

Now, our family has grown, and our lives have become increasingly busier. Add to that the way the  technology world has exploded, and permeates all aspects of our lives. It has become that much more meaningful for us to take time to “unplug” as a family, and to give our kids our full attention, all screens aside.

Some nights we read books together, other nights we play rounds of Candy Land and Guess Who. Other times we bake up a favorite treat and sit around and tell stories and laugh. On a warm night, we can be found outside watching our girls do tricks on the tramp and throwing a football.

Whatever activity you choose to do on your “unplugged night” isn’t as important as the way your loved ones will feel when they have your full attention, and this meaningful time together.

As the holiday seasons approach and our time is often crunched into activities, holiday parties, and so many wonderful things going on, take time to really connect with your family by having an “unplugged night” of your own.
