One of the big studies that medical doctors and therapists alike are ogling over is the ACES study. ACES stands for Adverse Childhood Experiences Study. Since 1995 groundbreaking research has started with over 17,000 participants. The results have been validated over and over since then. Basically, the study shows that the adverse childhood experiences we have impact our adult health and longevity of life. YES! This means doctors now see why asking about abuse and trauma in your childhood helps them understand your heart disease and diabetes!

I love this study. It helps us see that adverse childhood experiences lead to ->Cognitive and mental deficits ->Adoption of health risk behaviors -> Disease, disability and social problems -> Ultimately, the study finds that adverse childhood experiences lead to early death.

The infographic at the beginning of this article is worth 1,000 words. Take the top right box of “Three types of ACES” to give yourself a score of 0-10. Read about and take the official ACES questionnaire here on the WHO website for an official score.

The implications for this research show us how important preventative intervention is for children. It reemphasizes what we already know about the importance of building resilience in children. As a parent, do not underestimate the importance of teaching your children how to handle difficult situations. Do not underestimate emotional coping skills or behavior modification. Arm yourself with books, community support, and positive social connection for your kids.
