Going Back to the Beginning

Going Back to the Beginning

marriage counseling

When was the last time you took a moment to remember how your relationship started? When first meeting our spouse we more than likely saw the many great and positive things about them. I know with my husband, I was taken back by what a real gentleman he was. It was a quality in a man that I had not seen for a while. In the beginning, we look past the flaws that we might see in our partners that are now things that drive us crazy. I never thought much about my husband’s crumbs left on the counter in his ‘bachelor pad’ but now I think about it all of the time because it is now our counter! We all have our little things and sometimes we have our big things that drive a wedge in our relationships. When we let these little and big things become more of our focus and block us from seeing the great and positive things in our spouse we fell in love with, the marriage gets off balance.

Take some time to remember when you first met your spouse. Think of the things that they did and the qualities in them that made you fall in love with them. Sit down together and tell each other these things. In talking together about your beginning, you might find something that you never knew drew your spouse to you. You can also come closer together as you talk about the positive aspects of each other instead of the negatives that might be taking over your mind and your relationship. My husband and I talk of our first date often and some of the other things from the beginning of our relationship. I notice that when we do, we laugh together, we smile more and we remember the good things and the fun times we have shared together. Looking back at our beginnings can bring back the positive aspects that might be missing from the marriage.
