3 Tips to Keep Relationships Strong During the Holidays

Do you associate December with family? What many do not realize is that December is the most stressful month of the year on family relationships. Schedules are packed with gatherings, parties, shopping, decorating, cooking, and stress. Despite the proposed benefit of these packed weeks surrounding the holidays, the reality is that sometimes the benefits may not outweigh the excessive stress.

So how can you minimize the negative impact of holiday stress? Here are some simple tips:

  1. Limit commitments. There will be more things you can commit to during the holidays. Focus on the ones that are most meaningful – close family gatherings, events that will strengthen relationships, etc.
  2. Don’t overspend. Financial stress is a common problem in December as desires to give fabulous gifts blurs the reality of budgetary constraints. Increased stress caused by financial pressure may not be worth the benefit of the gift that will be given.
  3. Focus on making memories. Think back to the most meaningful holiday memories you have. They are not likely about specific gifts that were all the rage that year. Rather, they are likely about quality time or experiences with those you love. What better way could you keep your relationships strong during the holidays than to make memories?
